Child Development Center
The Child Development Center (CDC) and Learning Lab offer half-day and full-day preschool programs for children ages 2-5. The Center serves children of students, faculty, staff and the community, with locations at both the Liberal Arts Campus and the Pacific Coast Campus open year-round.
Operated in partnership with the College’s Child Development Department, the Center follows best practices for early childhood education based on years of professional experience, as well as the latest research and technology. Toddlers and preschoolers benefit from activities and interaction in an engaging environment that fosters positive social growth, relationships and the joy of learning. Center staff includes dedicated student teachers specializing in early childhood education.
The CDC employs the practice of Leave No Child Inside, inspired by Richard Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods. From his book, the teachers at the CDC make a conscious effort to spend more time outdoors in nature and focusing on outdoor classrooms, formerly known as the playground. More focus was placed on outdoor play and an emergent curriculum project involving water play quickly evolved.
The outdoor reading area is designed to allow guest readers to stop by and share a favorite story. Some of our guests have included the LBCC faculty & staff, police officers, librarians, family members of enrolled children and CDC alumni.
Both locations are open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, except on holidays and during the winter and fall semester breaks. Rates are affordable, and the tuition may be reduced or free for families who qualify based on income. Programs also offer nutritious lunches and snacks at no extra cost for eligible children.
