Providing Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors 

The purpose of all Cultural Heritage and History celebrations is to affirm and elevate students by celebrating the diverse tapestry of intersectional identities that make us LBCC. Through these events, we seek to provide students with mirrors in which to see their identity recognized, honored, and valued. They also serve as windows for students of other identities to gain a deeper appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion. And finally, sliding glass doors, inviting everyone in to fully participate.  

Over time, several events have become staples for our Cultural Heritage months. All were developed by individual work groups and fostered great reviews. In the spirit of collective impact and institutional change, we have now developed a baseline offering of events coordinated by different areas of the college. These efforts are instrumental in ensuring our students feel engaged, validated, empowered, and inspired- one more way for them to know that they belong at Long Beach City College!

Beyond the Box – Coordinated by Ethnic Studies

Location: LAC B206 -Social Justice Intercultural Center (SJIC)

 The Beyond the Box workshop series is designed to explore the diversity and complexity encompassed within umbrella terms used to represent a wide cross-section of society. The intent is to go “beyond the box” of what pop culture shows us to honor the lived experiences of those placed in it.

Meet your Village – Halo Halo Mixer- Coordinated by the SJIC

The Meet Your Village workshop Series is designed to provide the campus community with an opportunity to meet peers, staff, faculty, and administrators who identify as they do. One of many ways for you to know that you have a village that is proud of you, supports you, and is here for you. You belong here!

LBCC Pride: Election 2024 & The LGBTQIA+ Community

Join us for a critical discussion on the impact of proposed anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation in the upcoming 2024 election, exploring its potential effects on civil rights, equity and equality.

Sip N Science – Coordinated by Math & Science

Location: Science Resource Center (LAC D-104)

Join us for an inspiring event where LBCC students, Elise Hastie and Jorman Villavicencio, will share their research experience this past Summer at Cal State LA through the Research Experience for Undergraduates (RU) program. In honor of Filipino Heritage month we will be serving Filipino food! Masarap!

The Sip N Science workshop series is designed to engage the LBCC community in science, to show that it is fun and interesting for everyone through non-technical, science-themed talks that anyone can understand.

Keeping It 100/Labor Spotlight – Coordinated by Placement Services and Labor Center

The Keeping It 100 workshop series is designed to explore the realities of navigating education and career spaces in a society filled with social/cultural norms, stereotypes, barriers, and inequities. These are authentic conversations where we get to learn from those who have been there and done that.

Film Screening – “A Wrinkle In Time”- Coordinated by ASB 

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 30, 12:00PM – 2:00PM
Location: TTC EE-102 (Student Union)

A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of 13-year old Meg, who is frustrated with how she fits in at school and distracted by the long absence of her father. Meg sets off on an insterstellar journey to rescue her father, accompanied by her precocious young brother, Charles Wallace, played by Filipino actor, Deric McCabe.

 The Film Screening series is designed to celebrate and elevate the diversity on our campus by showcasing films created by, centered on, or starring members of the community being celebrated.

Sip N Paint – Coordinated by Transfer Center 

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 30, 2:00PM – 4:00PM
Location: LAC M114

The Sip N Paint workshop series is designed to provide the campus community with an opportunity to engage their creative sides while sharing space with good people. All participants are provided with a canvas, paints, and other materials to unwind while enjoying artistic expression, good company, food, and sparkling cider.

LBCC PRIDE – Coordinated by the LGBTQIA+ workgroup to recognize 

The LBCC PRIDE workshop series is designed to celebrate and bring awareness to the needs of our LGBTQIA+ community. Rather than holding Pride Month in June, when the campus sees a pronounced dip in foot traffic, the intent is to spread these themed events throughout the year.
