What is EOPS? 

Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) is a state-funded community college program that provides “over and above” services to Long Beach City College students from social, economic, educational or language-disadvantaged backgrounds. The program supports the enrollment, retention, transfer of students, and helps facilitate the successful completion of their educational goals. Our goal is to assist our students to be successful in navigating through their college careers by overcoming barriers that may be hindering their success.  

Do I Qualify for EOPS?  

To qualify for EOPS the following eligibility requirements must be met: 

  • Be a California resident or an eligible AB540 student / California “Dreamer”  
  • Be enrolled fulltime (12 units or more) or have a ¾ waiver for a reduced unit load (9-11.5 units) ** 
  • Qualify to receive the California College Promise Grant (Formerly BOG Fee Waiver), A and B or C if EFC = 0* 
  • Have less than 55 degree-applicable units completed* 
  • Meet educationally disadvantaged criteria determined by the EOPS Program 
  • Students must submit transcripts if they attended another college 
** Exemptions may apply for DSPS and NextUp eligible students. 
* Exemptions may apply for NextUp eligible students. 

How Do I Apply for EOPS? 

After you have applied for LBCC admission: 

  • Step 1: Apply for Financial Aid FASFA or CA Dream Act  
  • Step 2: Complete EOPS application
    (Once FA has determined eligibility you will be invited to apply through your Viking portal application should appear in your to do list)  
  • Step 3: Submit any additional documentation requested
    (Transcripts, DSPS letter, ¾ waiver, etc.)   

Once EOPS application and all documentation are submitted EOPS will process your application and notify you by email if you have been accepted to the program.  

If accepted: 

  • Step 4: complete EOPS New Student Orientation (NSO)
    (Will be invited through Viking Portal) 
  • Schedule a one-hour Educational Plan (EP) with one of our EOPS counselors 

Do I Have to Enroll in 12 Units or More? 

No, some exceptions may apply. 

  • Be a NextUp student (0.5 units working toward 9 units) 
  • Have a current reduced load letter from your DSPS counselor
  • Have an approved ¾ waiver on file. (9-11.5 units) 

Do I have to meet with a counselor? 

Yes, EOPS requires our students to make 3 EOPS contacts per semester. First and last contact can only be made with one of our EOPS counselors. We do allow second contacts to be made with the programs listed below:

What are the Deadlines for EOPS Contacts? 

Spring 2023 
  • First Contact: January 17 – April 10
  • Second contact: Begins March 20
  • Third contact: April 3 – June 9

CARE

What is CARE? 

The Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) is a supplemental component of EOPS that specifically assists students who are single parents or heads of household receiving cash aid through CalWORKs/TANF. CARE offers supportive services, so students can acquire the education, training, and marketable skills needed to transition from public assistance to employment and self-sufficiency.    

Do I Qualify for CARE?

To qualify for CARE the following eligibility requirements must be met: 

New Students  
  • Must be eligible and meet all EOPS eligibility requirements  
  • Submit a CARE application and current Verification of Benefits Form  
  • Complete mandatory intake with a CARE Support Staff   
  • Currently receiving CalWORKs/TANF cash aid for yourself and/or your children  
  • Must be declared single head of household declared by CalWORKs/TANF  
  • Parent must be 18 years old or older   
  • Have at least one child under the age of 18  
Continuing Students   
  • Must be an active student and in compliance with EOPS  
  • Currently receiving CalWORKs/TANF cash aid for yourself and/or children  
  • Must be declared single head of household declared by CalWORKs/TANF  
  • Parent must be 18 years old or older  
  • Have at least one child under the age of 18  
  • Submit a CARE application and Verification of Benefits Form  

How Do I Apply for CARE? 

  • Step1: be an active and current EOPS student 
  • step 2: Complete CARE application
    (you will be invited to apply through your Viking portal. Application should appear in your to do list)  
  • Step 3: Submit any additional documentation requested
    (Current V.O.B, current notice of action, etc.)   

Once CARE application and all documentation are submitted EOPS/CARE will process your application and notify you by email if you have been accepted to the program.  

How Do I Receive My CARE Grant? 

In order to receive your full CARE grant you must complete a minimum of four CARE or CARE-approved workshops. We offer a variety of workshops for our students throughout each semester.
