The American Philosophical Association

The American Philosophical Association promotes the discipline and profession of philosophy, both within the academy and in the public arena. The APA supports the professional development of philosophers at all levels and works to foster greater understanding and appreciation of the value of philosophical inquiry. The APA is active in the defense of professional rights of philosophers. It advocates for part-time and under-employed philosophers and for philosophers whose professional rights are at risk, and it provides assistance to departments threatened by lack of institutional support. 

 

The International Association of Women Philosophers

The International Association of Women Philosophers is a professional association and network that provides a forum for discussion, interaction and cooperation among women engaged in teaching and research in all aspects of philosophy, with a particular emphasis on feminist philosophy. Founded in 1976 in Würzburg (Germany) as “Association of Women Philosophers” (APh), the IAPh has gradually grown into an international organization with members all over the world. Currently, the IAPh has more than 380 members from more than 35 different countries.

 

The National Women’s Studies Association

Established in 1977, the National Women’s Studies Association has as one of its primary objectives promoting and supporting the production and dissemination of knowledge about women and gender through teaching, learning, research and service in academic and other settings. 
 

 

California State University, Los Angeles

Cal State LA has a philosophy program, which includes diversity options. The Department of Philosophy offers a BA in Philosophy that engages students in thinking about fundamental questions of life. Studies include ethics, political and social thought, logic, theory of knowledge, philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, philosophy of art and film, philosophy of law, philosophy of religions, metaphysics, feminist philosophy, philosophy and race, biomedical ethics, existentialism, postmodern thought, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of mathematics. The MA in Philosophy offers students a broad background in both the history of philosophy and contemporary thought.

 

The LGBTQ Center Long Beach

The LGBTQ Center Long Beach advances equity for LGBTQ people through culturally responsive advocacy, education, programs, and services. They envision fully affirming communities where all LGBTQ people live in health, wellness, safety and prosperity. The Center began in 1977 as living room gatherings to discuss issues important to the LGBTQ community. The Center was officially incorporated in 1980 as One in Long Beach, Inc. and has been providing a variety of health, social, advocacy, legal, and service programs to the LGBTQ community in the Greater Long Beach area for three decades.
