Who is Donald Drury?
Learn more about the man behind the award.
Long Beach City College historian and English instructor Donald Drury provided years of dedication to students, faculty, and the community from 1947-1982. The former LBCC student wrote The First Fifty Years Long Beach City College, 1927-1977, a 128-page definitive history of the college. As a faculty member, he helped create that history. He was instrumental in forming the Academic Senate, he directed the public information office, and he taught in the English department. “He was known for walking into his classroom with a pile of books, many of them old and scuffed holding tiny torn strips of paper with small notations protruding from their pages” notes former student and Professor Emeritus Frank Gaspar. The respect with which colleagues and former students speak of Drury is alive today. He lived a life centered on loving art, particularly an absolute love of books and good writing.
