LBCC Assessment Center
Guided Placement Tool, Chemistry & ESL Assessments

Post

LBCC has Welcome Centers on each campus. The Welcome Centers are here to assist students with any questions related to their placement information in English, Reading, Math, and/or ESL.

Guided Placement Tool

The Guided Placement Tool is an online questionnaire that is completed by the student to help inform placements in English, Reading, Math, and/or credit ESL. Students will receive the link to the Guided Placement Tool in their LBCC welcome letter (the welcome letter is sent via email approximately 24 hours after application). Students can also access the Guided Placement Tool in the Viking Student System.

After students complete and submit the Guided Placement Tool, placement information will be available in their Viking Student System under My Placements section in 24 hours. Students will need to use their LBCC ID and password to access the Viking System.

If students have questions about their placements, they can contact the Welcome Center on either campus.

Individual Assessments

Chemistry Assessment

The Assessment Center administers individual assessments for Chemistry by appointment. This is a 45-minute paper and pencil test. Scientific calculators are not allowed.  Completion of this assessment will place a student in either Chemistry 1A (General Chemistry) or Chemistry 2 (Elementary Chemistry).

Please call the Assessment Center at LAC to schedule an appointment.

What Should Students Bring for the Chemistry Assessment?

  • A valid picture ID (no picture ID, no test, no exceptions)
  • LBCC Student ID#
  • Two #2 pencils

You can obtain your LBCC Student ID # by completing an LBCC Online Application for Admission. Any questions about Admissions Application or LBCC Student ID # go to Admissions Office LAC A-1075 OR PCC GG-102 or call (562) 938-4485.

ESL Assessment

If a student has limited English language skills, they are directed to take the LBCC ESL Placement Survey. To determine which survey is appropriate for the student, please contact the ESL Office at 562-938-3061 or 562-938-3070.

  • If a student has limited English language skills, they are directed to take the LBCC ESL Pilot Survey, which places students into the basic ESL levels of the program: ESL 640/840, ESL 641/841, ESL 642/842, ESL 644/844, ESL 670/270 — 675/275, ESL 610/810 — 618/818 and ESL 664/864.

  • The Online LBCC ESL Placement Survey, which places students into the intermediate or advanced levels of the ESL program: ESL 664/864, 665/865 and 666/866.

  • ESL students who are placed in English 1, English 1 Plus, or English 1S may enroll in ESL 1S if the student chooses this option or if the counselor recommends. ESL 1S meets all the same requirements as English 1S.

ESL Placement

Please note that almost all ESL classes are available in either Credit (6** course number) or noncredit (8** course number). This is why two courses are shown for each placement level, i.e ESL 640/840. ESL 640 is noncredit, but ESL 840 is credit. The chart below explains the differences between Noncredit and Credit courses.

New students may enroll in ESL classes after completing the application for admissions online and the ESL orientation.

  • Students who know no English or just a few words may enroll in ESL 640/840 without a placement test. ESL 640/840 is the beginning of our ESL integrated skills (English for Everyday) sequence.

  • Students who understand some English should make an appointment for the ESL Pilot Placement Survey in the ESL office or by calling 562-938-3037. This Survey places students in one of the beginning levels or qualifies the student to take any of the intermediate level courses or Ready for Work courses in the ESL program. Beginning ESL integrated skills course sequence placements are provided for 641/841, 642/842, or 644/844. There are six levels, but we do not place students into every level.

  • Placements are provided for the Ready for Work Course Sequence that starts with 670/270 and 671/271. These two levels are each the beginning of two separate three-level sequences. ESL 670/270 and 671/271 list ESL 644 or 844 as a prerequisite.

  • Placements are provided for intermediate-level skill courses. All these courses list ESL 645/845 as prerequisite. These courses may be taken in any order:  Grammar 610A/810A, ESL 610B/810B, Reading 612/812, Conversation 613/813, Writing 614/814, Accent Reduction 615/815, Vocabulary 618/818, and Integrated College Language Skills 664/864.

Advanced English students seeking college degrees or those who have plans to transfer should complete the ESL Placement Survey in their Viking Portal.  They need to click on the following links after logging to their Portal:  Viking Student System > Student Service > My Participation Agreements > ESL Placement Survey.  This survey places students into the advanced ESL levels (Integrated College Language Skills 1,2, or 3): ESL864/664, 865/665, 866/666. After ESL 866/666 students may take transfer level English. Any of the following are considered transfer level English: ESL1s, English1 plus, English1s, or English1.

  • Continuing students may be recommended for a higher placement by instructors.  This may require a prerequisite waiver signed by the Department Head to complete enrollment.

Note: Almost all ESL classes are available in either Credit (8** course number) or noncredit (6** course number)
