Library Access, Borrowing & Renewing Policies
Borrowing privileges, renewing guidelines, food and drink policy and cell phone and media player usage policy
All Long Beach City College and California State University Long Beach students, faculty, and staff can check out library materials. Alumnus, emeritus, and community members can check out items that are currently in print with a limit of three (3) items. You need to show a valid photo identification to check out any materials.
Your current student identification card is also your library card. You will need to be enrolled at LBCC and currently taking classes to check out materials. Student identification cards are available for free for currently enrolled students. If you do not have a student identification card we can use your driver’s license or California identification card and verify that you are currently taking classes.

Faculty Borrowing & Renewing
Books generally circulate to faculty for 120 days; faculty loans are subject to recall when there are other requests for the materials. Check LBCC Library Database and view My Record to determine what materials you have checked out. The Long Beach City College Libraries have a reciprocal borrowing agreement with the University Library at California State University Long Beach enabling eligible students, faculty, staff, and administrators to use both library systems. Textbook Reserves and other reserve items
Textbook Reserves
The Textbook Reserves Collection contains physical copies and electronic copies of current textbooks, used in classes. In order to use a reserve textbook, you need to be a currently enrolled student at LBCC. The time that the books can be checked out varies, from 2 hours to 7 days. If there is a student waiting to use a reserve textbook, it cannot be renewed. If no student is waiting on a reserve textbook, it can be renewed once (in person or by phone). Once a reserve textbook has been renewed, it will need to be returned to the library for 24 hours in order to allow all students equitable access.
Electronic Textbooks
The electronic textbooks are available online for 2-hour checkouts, using your Viking ID and password. When the book is being accessed by another student you will be placed on a waitlist until it is your turn to access the book. Returning Library Materials
Books and periodicals checked out at either campus can be returned at either library. Music CDs, CD-ROMs, videos, college catalogs, and reserve items are returned to the Library where they were initially checked out. Items checked out at California State University Long Beach connected to the reciprocal-borrowing privilege must be returned at that institution.
Renewing library materials
You can renew items in by phone, in person and online. To renew by phone, call (562) 938-4231 for the LAC Circulation Desk or (562) 938-3029 for the PCC Circulation Desk. In addition, you can also stop by the Circulation Desk anytime during the open hours to renew materials. Items do not need to be present to renew in person.
Using your LBCC Student ID card
You can use your card to check out materials at the LAC Library, PCC Library, and California State University Long Beach Library. Long Beach City College Library has a reciprocal agreement with the California State University Long Beach Library that allows borrowers to check out books and media. Reserve items, bound periodicals, remote access to electronic resources, and the library computer labs are not available to reciprocal Long Beach City College borrowers. Interlibrary Loan, borrowing items outside of our library system, is available to Long Beach City College students, faculty and staff for items not in our collection.
Checking out materials from CSULB
California State University Long Beach allows current Long Beach City College students to check out materials at their Library. All you need is your Long Beach City College ID card. You can also search OneSearch, the California State University Long Beach catalog, for available items before you check out any materials.
Food and Drink Policy
We recognize that our patrons spend many hours in the Library and may enjoy an occasional beverage or snack while studying. We appreciate your help in keeping the Library clean, minimizing the risk of damage to books and equipment, and preventing undesirable insects and pests. Therefore, the library staff will enforce the following policies:
- Drinks/Beverages: Are Permitted.
- Food: Are Permitted.
- You must dispose of trash, clean up any mess you may have made and wipe up any spills before leaving the library.
- Please report any accidents or spills to the library staff as quickly as possible.
Cell Phone and Media Player Usage Policy
Sound carries in the Library. Patrons are encouraged to practice appropriate cell phone and media player etiquette when using their personal devices in the library. This includes:
- Never in a designated “Quiet Study” area
- Ringers must be silenced/vibrate
- Prolonged or frequent calls are prohibited
- Text messaging encouraged
- Refraining from carrying on extended or loud conversations near students who are studying or otherwise engaged in research activities.
- Always use headphones to listen to audio.
Library Computer Usage & Printing
Desktop computers are available for students to complete academic assignments. Students will need to log on to the computers with their Viking username and password. The printers in the library are part of the campuswide system, please visit https://www.lbcc.edu/pay-print for more information. There are no copiers available in the library at this time. All computer stations and printing areas close ten minutes before the library closes.
