Important Information on SEVIS and VISA Status updates - 4/22/25
What is a SEVIS record termination?
SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is a federal database that tracks international students in F-1 or J-1 visa status. SEVIS records are typically terminated by school officials when a student fails to maintain status. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently begun terminating some records directly. If your SEVIS record is terminated, your lawful status in the U.S. ends, and you should consult with the international student program office immediately.
What is a visa revocation?
The U.S. Department of State may revoke a valid visa, rendering it unusable for re-entry into the U.S., even if it has not yet expired. You may still remain in the U.S. if your SEVIS status is valid, but you cannot travel and re-enter with a revoked visa. DHS may also choose to review your SEVIS status based on the reason for the revocation.
How will I know if my visa is revoked?
You may receive an email from the U.S. Department of State—often to the email you used on your visa application (which may differ from your LBCC email). The college is typically not notified. If you are unsure or believe your visa may have been revoked, please contact your issuing U.S. embassy or consulate, or use the Visa Status Check portal.
Is an expired visa the same as a revoked visa?
No. A visa expiration is normal and means you need to apply for a new visa if you leave the U.S. A revoked visa, however, is no longer valid for re-entry even if it shows a future expiration date.
What should I do if my visa is revoked or SEVIS record is terminated?
Contact the LBCC International Student Program office right away.
We will help you confirm your status and advise on next steps.
You should also speak with a qualified immigration attorney as
soon as possible.
Remaining in the U.S. without valid immigration status can have
serious consequences, including loss of work authorization,
inability to continue enrollment, and future visa ineligibility.
What happens if immigration enforcement becomes involved?
Know your rights. If approached by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), remain calm. You do not have to answer questions or sign documents without legal representation. If you are detained or face an emergency immigration issue, please contact the International Program office immediately. We will help connect you to the appropriate support.
Can I still travel internationally?
Travel should be carefully considered. If your visa is revoked or your SEVIS record is terminated, re-entry into the U.S. may be denied. Speak to the International Program office before making any travel plans.
