The Port of Long Beach Maritime Center of Excellence at Long Beach City College (LBCC) will be holding free orientation sessions to educate the community about participation in its offerings.

Orientations will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Thurs., March 28; 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tues., April 2; and 10 a.m. to noon on Tues., April 9. The meetings will be held in building LL, room LL-102 at LBCC’s Pacific Coast Campus, located at 1305 E. Pacific Coast Hwy. Long Beach, CA, 90806.

The Port of Long Beach Maritime Center of Excellence at Long Beach City College is a new program that trains community members who are interested in the global logistics and supply chain industries. LBCC’s Workforce Development offers the short-term fee-based educational classes which target occupations in the global logistics and supply chain industries.

The industries selected are expected to have continued growth and demand for trained workers in Southern California with the average annual wage of $63,130, approximately 14 percent higher than all other industries in Southern California.

Training will prepare people for positions in:

• Dispatching for Logistics
• Intermediary Logistics
• Supervisory Transportation Operations
• Supervisory Goods Management

To accommodate work schedules, training will take place in the evenings and on Saturdays. Costs will vary between $388 and $398 per class, but scholarships will also be available.

The goal of the training at the Maritime Center for Excellence is to align to jobs at the Port and other port-related industries after graduation from LBCC. In 2018, the Port became the first industry partner to join the Long Beach College Promise and agreed to support the Maritime Center of Excellence’s inaugural year.
