Social scientists study human behavior, beliefs, and how they influence society. The Social Sciences Department offers programs in several disciplines: Anthropology, the study of human biology, adaptation and culture through time; Geography, a spatial science that synthesizes interactions between human society and physical environments; Philosophy, the nature of existence, knowledge, logic, religion and values; Psychology, the science of thought and mental health; Social Justice Studies, provides an understanding of systemic roots of inequality as well as potential solutions and remedies to social injustices; and Sociology, the science of social interaction and institutions.
The department offers various courses, all of which foster analytical skills and critical thinking. Some concentrations also involve research, field work and/or laboratory experience. All lead to associate degrees and prepares students to pursue their bachelor’s degree and careers in many fields. These include education, health care and medicine, human resources, law, business and finance, technology, entertainment, marketing and communications, and government.
Long Beach City College hosted the first annual Meet the Social Sciences Night for LBCC students and community members. Attendees were given the opportunity to meet with Social Science alumni and faculty, and participate in games and activities related to the Social Sciences. More than 400 people attended this year!
