Linguistics

The mission of the Linguistics program at LBCC is to provide students with discipline-specific skills and knowledge for transfer to a 4-year college or university. Since language in some form lies at the root of most human activities, commitment to a strong linguistics program is critical to the college’s mission to “promote equitable student learning and achievement, academic excellence, and workforce development by delivering high-quality educational programs and support services to our diverse communities.”

CAREER INFO

The study of Linguistics develops many skills which are applicable across many diverse career paths. A Linguistics degree provides students with the skills to analyze language in a variety of areas.

The Linguistics Program will lead students to transfer to a 4-year college or university. There are B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs in fields such as linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, computer science, anthropology, philosophy, communication sciences, education, English, cognitive science, neuroscience, and the focus on teaching English to non-native speakers. Students may also transfer into professional programs such as law school, speech pathology, communication sciences, and disorders, or library information sciences.

There is no set number. Depending on what area of Linguistics in which one specializes, it is possible to only be fluent in one’s native language.
