Program: Fire Science
Long Beach City College’s Fire Science Program is designed to prepare students for a career in the fire service, as well as to prepare working Firefighters for promotions within their own departments. Students learn the fundamentals of fire science, including the history and philosophy of fire protection, fire ground operations, and the fire department’s functions and role in local government, including related laws and regulations.

The Fire Science classes at Long Beach City College prepare students for an exciting and satisfying career as a Firefighter working to provide emergency fire and medical services, fire prevention, and public education within the community. Our program provides several advantages for students including:

Will obtaining a fire science degree guarantee me a job as a Firefighter?
No. Obtaining a college degree does not guarantee you a job, however, the job market is such that having a degree will better prepare you for when you begin the competitive testing process. You will learn a lot about the fire service, the hiring processes, and the duties of a Firefighter. Plus, having a degree will definitely be a key item for building a strong resume.
How long does it take to complete the program?
Depending on the number of units you take and whether you are a full-time or part-time student, completing a certificate program can take as little as one semester, and completing an associate degree program can take about two years.
