FAQ

How long does it take to complete the program?

Although the journalism program offers a variety of degrees and certificates, our Associate in Arts in Journalism for Transfer Degree (A.A.-T.) is the most popular and useful degree we offer. Students must complete four journalism courses, two related courses and their general education to Plan B or Plan C levels. We offer a path to complete the major requirements each semester, so a student could, in theory, complete the major requirements in one semester if they took four journalism courses.

Most likely, students will complete the entire degree in two to three years, depending on their willingness to take full course loads.

WHICH COURSE SHOULD I START WITH?

Students can take our courses in any order, but we recommend enrolling in JOUR 10: Intro to Global Media and JOUR 80: Multimedia Newsroom (student newspaper class) your first semester.

What should I take after that?

Our faculty meet with our students each semester to ensure they are taking the right classes to graduate in a timely fashion. For advice, contact Walter Hammerworld.

How can I work for the school newspaper/website?

Our student-run newspaper and website are a product of JOUR 80-83 and 86-88 classes. Join any of them to work for the paper.

Do I need skills/prior experience to join the student newspaper?

No. Our faculty and staff are excited to train students at all levels, including people with no experience, in all the facets of journalism.

Do I need a camera or any other gear to work for the student newspaper?

No. Our program is equipped with state-of-the-art professional gear, including still cameras, video cameras, audio recorders, studio gear. We believe we are better equipped than most local professional newsrooms.

How much freedom do I have on the student newspaper?

Our newspaper is 100 percent student-run. We have student editors who make all decisions on content. Students report. Student edit. Students make choices.

How do I get more information?

Contact Walter Hammerworld, we would be excited to have you join our program.

How do I receive my degree or certificate after I finish the coursework?

You will need to complete an application for your degree or certificate and submit that application to the LBCC Admissions & Records office. Read how to apply for graduation and receive your degree or certificate for more details.
