Applied Design

Overview

Applied Design

The study of Applied Design overlaps Craft, Visual Art and Product Design and generally includes jewelry and metalwork, wood, glass, ceramics and textiles to develop functional objects. More recently, computer aided software has helped to drive innovations in the field. At LBCC, Applied Design is offered both as a survey class and a course of study leading to a Certificate of Achievement and an Associate of Arts with an Applied Design specialization.

PROGRAM & COURSES

The program is led by Kristin Beeler and supported by experienced professionals. We partner regularly with local and national organizations in jewelry, metals and crafts to create a network that supports our students’ goals after leaving the classroom.

The AA in Arts includes both Beginning Jewelry and Ceramics I. Students may then focus on an Applied Design option for another 7 units in Ceramics and/or Jewelry.

The Applied Design Certificate is designed to bundle together courses and milestones that will prepare students for a successful career in making functional objects. Supported by grants from Strong Workforce of California, students are introduced to a wide range of approaches for functional design as a professional pursuit. The Certificate encompasses the fundamental skills needed for three dimensional materials and processes in Art. The certificate is designed to successfully prepare students to apply aesthetic principles and technical skills to wood, metal, clay, and paper/fiber for the construction of functional objects. It encompasses the breadth of design, content and production through essential skills such as fabrication, forming, casting, material study, and techniques of creative problem-solving. It also builds an initial Applied Design portfolio for transfer to 4-year programs.

The Art 34 Applied Design class is a basic introduction to functional object making through a survey of materials and processes. This class is team taught by faculty who are experts in their areas. Students enrolled may get to work in a variety of studios during the semester including Jewelry, Wood, Digital Media, Ceramics, and Printmaking. Exploration of each media allows students to explore a range of processes around a common theme for the semester. The class may also introduce digital design equipment and media including laser cutting, water jet cutting and 3D printing.
